The Leading Player and troupe guide Pippin though various life experiences and begins his search for the meaning and truth for his “extraordinary” life.

"Pippin" cast

Pippin accompanies Charlemagne and Lewis by going to war against the Visigoths.  He discovers however that the death, blood shed, post victory sacking of the enemy, plus an encounter with a now headless Visigoth warrior, convinces Pippin that war does not supply the satisfaction.

"Pippin" cast: Lewis, Charles, Pippin

Dissatisfied with war, Pippin goes to the country where his grandmother, Berthe lives to seek her comfort and her special wisdom about life.

Berthe, Charlemagne's mother, is estranged from court due to conflicts with her new daughter-in-law, Fastrada.

Refreshed with her advice, Pippin seeks fulfillment in pursuit of love, and after his choreographic encounter with many women, discovers that physical love is not enough.

"Pippin" cast: Berthe & Pippin

Leading Player reveals to Pippin how Charlemagne's reign brutally oppresses those
he rules guiding Pippin into politics.

Pippin decides to take action against his father's tyrannical rule in a plot to overthrow Charlemagne in leading his own revolution.

"Pippin" cast: Leading Player & Pippin

Fastrada learns of Pippin's plot and "in her effort to gain the throne for her darling son, Lewis," encourages Charlemagne to go for his yearly prayer in the remote Chapel at Arles.

Fastrada informs Pippin on this unguarded opportunity to end his father's rule.

 "Pippin" cast: Pippin, Fastrada, Lewis

No matter who is eliminated in this coup, Fastrada will help her son Lewis be one step closer to the throne.

Pippin soon discovers that being the Holy Roman Emperor is not as easy as he thought, and the Leading Player magically restores Charlemagne to the throne.

 "Pippin" cast: Fastrada & Lewis

Leading Player leads Pippin  on "The Right Track" where he tries art, the religious life, and many other things each ending dissatisfaction.

Pippin ends up on a roadside in abject despair when discovered by a Catherine, an ordinary widow with a small boy and a large estate who takes him in.

 "Pippin" cast: Catherine

Pippin believes in his extraordinary destiny, but reluctantly at first becomes a part of the daily routine, and is finally drawn together in a classic musical theater love song with Catherine.

When all seems to be heading toward a traditional happy ending, Pippin, feels trapped by this simple, ordinary existence, realizing that this is all his life will be, runs away.

"Pippin" cast: Pippin, Catherine, Leading Player

Now facing the entire troupe of actors, he is tempted to do the extraordinary Grande Finale in an attempt to satisfy Pippin’s desire for complete fulfillment.
