Guys and Dolls is set in
Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy -
considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy – soars with the
spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who
have become legends in the canon: Sky Masterson (Hunter Muckel), the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love. |
Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer, whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years;
while Nathan Detroit, her devoted fianceé,
desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game,
has successfully avoided walking the aisle. |
In order to raise a thousand dollars to rent a garage for his next crap game, Nathan wagers Sky that he could not take any doll to Havana with him. Accepting the bet, Nathan chooses the buttoned-up mission doll, Sarah Brown.
The mission is in danger of being closed by headquarters if no one shows for the next prayer meeting. Sky finally persuades Sarah to go to with him by promising to deliver a dozen sinners if she will fly to Havana for dinner. Unknowingly indulging in several Cuban cocktails, Sarah reveals her wild side, but Sky does not take advantage of her and he returns Sarah to New York with her virtue in tact. |
However, Adelaide discovers Nathan's latest crap game, and he pleads for her to remain his doll. |
When all Nathan's crapshooters are discovered by Lt Brannigan wearing red carnations, Nathan says it is a bachelor dinner and agrees to marry Adelaide as a cover.
Sarah and Adelaide and lament their gambling men's ways, and together decide in song to "Marry The Man Today" as the only way to reform the men they love. Everything works out in the end, thanks to the machinations of Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling's hilarious, fast-paced book and Frank Loesser's bright, brassy, immortal score, which takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City. Funny and romantic, Guys And Dolls is ideal for audiences of any age. |
With memorable Frank Loesser songs:
Luck Be A Lady Tonight "Guys and Dolls is the perfect musical comedy. This is why Broadway was born! One of the funniest and melodious shows...everything about it seems practically perfect."
